Extension springs lose tension faster in cold than torsion springs do, and Welby's housing stock leans toward exactly that older spring type. Add non-insulated steel panels, standard for the period, and you get doors that swell and stick at the bottom seal every winter and then bind on the track once temperatures swing back up. This isn't a Thornton problem or a Welby problem specifically - it's what happens to any door of this age and spring type sitting in this climate band for five decades.
